Review of The Lady from Shanghai (1947) by Karen E — 11 Dec 2007
I remember running across this film late one night during a tcm rita hayworth marathon: once it started, I couldn't turn away. welles has a firm grip on the niche of eerie film-making, and his 1948 murder-mystery will send chills up and down your bones.
the almost hypnotising pace of the plot owes thanks in part to the magnetic script and the even more beguiling soundtrack. not to be dismissed is the performance by rita hayworth, the most beautiful woman ever to appear on screen.
most importantly, the ending could promote this movie by its own merits -- it is one of the finest examples of tension created through camera-work that I have witnessed. welles proves he is not only a grand director, but a captivating storyteller as well.
