Review of The Lady from Shanghai (1947) by Valerie M — 30 Mar 2009
God, I love Orson Welles. He's such a badass it turns out he can take an overdose of pain pills and still beat up two guys, outwit the police, and escape from his own murder trial. He even almost pulls off that goofy Irish accent.
Everett Sloane and Rita Hayworth give good performances too. I wish the studios would have stopped fucking around with Welles's work. Did they have to ruin everything he put his genius hands on? The movie is only really, truly, distinctly Welles's during the bits at the amusement park at the end.
The speech about the sharks was great. Overall, a good movie. I wish I could have seen it as Welles intended it, because I'm sure it would have been great.
