Review of The Lady from Shanghai (1947) by Forrest K — 20 Jun 2010
What begins as a fascinating, simmering pit of mutual revulsion deflates once the plot is obliged to start. However much whiplash the zany turns and recursive convolutions may cause, the flick never stops being a joy to watch, all the way through the farcical courtroom scene where an attorney cross-examines himself.
Just when all seems to be lost to a game of outlandish one-upmanship, the final scene in the hall of mirrors vaults this film from wacky escapism into something a bit darker, and much more self-aware.
