Review of The Lady Eve (1941) by Jareth S — 12 Nov 2010
Despite what others may choose, I'd pick this film as writer-director Preston Sturges greatest screwball comedy. Barbara Stanwyck is at her best here. She's terrific in the role of a card sharp who falls for a rich heir on a cruise. When the going gets tough, she gets plotting with an entertainingly devious scheme. The scene of Stanwyck running her fingers through Fonda's hair is one of the sexiest movie scenes ever, despite having to adhere to the stifling Hays Code. This movie has a wonderfully twisted sense of humor about the battle of the sexes.
If you can't find anywhere to rent it, keep an eye on the cable tv schedule -- TCM seems to run this a few times a year.
