Review of The Lady (2011) by Paul B — 29 Dec 2011
I thought it was an excellent film. Forget the reviews of the top critics who seem very keen to compare Besson's other films with this one; one talks about his usual "locked and loaded" type lady - as if Aung San Suu Kyi should be locked and loaded whatever that pretentious phrase means. Several top critics use most of their review retelling the plot, and grudgingly concede that it is sincere, while making sweeping statements like everything else is wrong. When I glanced at comments from normal readers in the Guardian, I found comments like "It's a stunning film that shows staggering bravery. It's essential viewing." and "can't believe the negative reviews". Listen to what ordinary people think - go and see this wonderful film and judge for yourself.
One critic praises the Nobel Peace prize ceremony as really emotional, another selects it as a a very poor part of the film, saying it lacks punch.
