Review of The Kings of Summer (2013) by Devin H — 05 Apr 2014
Joe convinces his best friend, Patrick, to run away from home and build a house in the woods where they can spend the summer free from their parents' infuriating habits. A socially inept classmate, Biaggio, joins them uninvited, and the trio's initial euphoric joy gradually unravels.
If you can suspend disbelief in things like how sturdy their "house" turns out, it's easy to enjoy the humor of their chosen construction materials. Likewise, several characters have weird behavior that is exaggerated to the point where it can brings laughs, but ultimately lessens the emotional impact of the conflict and resolution.
