Review of The Kings of Summer (2013) by Amilcar A — 20 Jun 2013
I watched WWZ earlier today and felt it was a $200MN clunker. The Kings of Summer probably cost $2MN and it's great. This is a true coming of age movie that puts Wes Thomas Anderson's latest to shame. It's funny, sad, intelligent and creative.
The story is about a trio of runaway kids (don't fret, they don't go too far) that want to be far from their parents. They find a secluded spot in the woods and build a house that frankly looks pretty amazing given the limitations.
The kids live there for a couple of weeks, surviving off pasta and rice they stole from home and Boston Market chicken from the money they stole prior to their departure. That doesn't matter. For the first time ever they feel independent and outside their parent's childish oppression.
As most teen movies goes, there's plenty of heartache, remorse and forgiveness. Nothing seems to be all that terrible and there are plenty of opportunities to redeem oneself. Ah, what it was to be young.
Great movie. Highly recommendable.
