Review of The Kings of Summer (2013) by Adam D — 13 Oct 2013
This film started out with potential but in the last third or so, it spirals out into the realm of pointlessness. The only character that I ended up liking until the end was the oddball, Biaggio. Joe never learns his lesson in the end about taking responsibility nor does he stand up for himself against his failed love interest, Kelly, or his best friend, Patrick. I might have forgiven Kelly if there hadn't been scenes that showed both Joe and Kelly knew exactly that Joe had a crush on her yet instead Kelly chooses Patrick. Patrick and Kelly both attempt to confront Joe but never did they apologize even once for hurting Joe's feelings. I ended up hating all three of them. Even if Kelly had gone over to Joe in the end, that would have been a cop out and not truly authentic.
As for the parents... I don't even want to comment on them. Basically, this is your crappy teen angst movie. I don't even recommend this movie for teenagers or even preteens because it teaches the wrong lessons. Only Biaggio stayed true to himself.
