Review of The Kings of Summer (2013) by Justin S — 13 Oct 2013
A notch above a typical Sundance-cookie-cutter-coming-of-age-flick. Films like these though get absolutely lost between comedy and drama. Nick Robinson as the lead is a slightly charming young actor, but doesn't possess the chops to carry a film.
There are also a number of ridiculous supporting characters that might have been stolen from the discarded remains of a failed SNL skit. I wish this film had confidence enough in its own story instead of succumbing to force-fed humor through second-bit comedians looking for indy cameo roles.
It just reminds me of the chasm that exists between comedic writers like John Hughes and most everyone else.
