The misery of Joe and Patrick was related to their parents. They both wanted to be independent but in no ways their suffering was same. One was frustrated that his father is choking him and the other was just not comfortable with the way he was being treated.

And the third friend, Biaggio, the most interesting character of all just wanted someone who he can call a s a friend.
