Review of The King of Masks (1995) by David O — 30 Jan 2008
As this opened, I thought "Oh, jeez. I _really_ don't want my heart warmed today." But. But but but. In the end, wiping away the tears, I thought "well, the Chinese just do it better.
" As others have commented, the background is glorious. Also glorious is the acting, particularly of the two leads, who really are irresistible. In some ways it is predictable, I suppose. But just let it win you over and you'll feel much better.
Interestingly, I was able to understand some of the spoken dialogue, and my Chinese is REALLY rusty.
