Review of The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007) by Anonymous User — 18 Jul 2009
An excellent story, yes, but a much larger triumph in the storytelling department. The plight of one Steve Wiebe, under insurmountable odds to defeat Billy Mitchell and his cult of followers is a narrative straight out of a Hollywood movie, and the movie knows this and adds to the tension with wonderful (but not deceptive) editing, with terrific moments caught on tape and some genuinely elegant sequences. and great hairpin twists from start to finish.
The great thing about The King Of Kong is that it sorta knows the silliness in its exterior: although it's a heartwarming inspiring tale in its core, it's about fucking Donkey Kong, and when they have a montage set to "Eye Of The Tiger", you can't help but see their sense of humor beneath the drama. Wildly entertaining documentary. See it.
