Review of The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007) by Kyle S — 18 Sep 2011
At times it is unfathomable that the people of focus in this documentary are real individuals. These living cartoons make King of Kong one of the most engaging documentaries I've ever seen. The commitment of these gamers, and their warped ideas of celebrity, is beyond hilarious.
Amidst the comedy, the director manages to establish a hero with humanity. With a clear protagonist/antagonist relationship, a narrative of events is designed, which is abnormal for a documentary. Although this narrative may have been forced outward through editing, the bullshit that comes out of Billy Mitchell's mouth is all real, and certainly the most entertaining element of the movie.
