Review of The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007) by Aaron L — 12 Nov 2012
I do not know what to quite make of this film. I find myself choosing sides between Steve Weibe, a down-on-his-luck former Boeing employee from Redmond, Washington, and Billy Mitchell (not of bomber fame), an egomaniacal, cartoonish restaurateur from Hollywood, Florida.
After hearing that Seth Gordon cut a great portion of the Mitchell footage in order to make him into a more lighthearted character, it is easy to decide for whom I should root. I like that Gordon lets the characters tell the stories and speak for themselves (ala Errol Morris).
But after watching the film and reflecting upon it, it all seems very preposterous and even a bit sad. But it kept me engaged.
