I'm surprised anyone else (John Papp) had actually seen this. I agree with him, it's ridiculous how overlooked it is. It's quirky, to be sure, but quite humorous and entertaining.
I do disagree, however, about the main character--I think Robert De Niro's character is very unusual for him--goofy, irritating, overbearing, a real loser. Since when does De Niro play a loser?
Ahead of its time with the theme of obsession with celebrities.
