Review of The King of Comedy (1982) by Mark B — 03 Jun 2008
I remember reading somewhere that scorsese simply pointed the camera at jerry lewis and let him be himself, meaning a real asshole. which is complete bullshit. the langford character is much deeper than a man forced to eat by himself, just as rupert pupkin is much more than just a nut.
it's worth your time just watch these two develop characters through mere acting. its also a thoughtful study of celebrity that goes a bit farther than the film paparazzi or, on the other side of the coin, tmz.
amazing innit? be warned that this movie is the most uncomfortable for the longest period of time I have ever seen (straw dogs wins most uncomfortable, but thats only like ten minutes.) I realize that its supposed to be funny at times and is, but I can't laugh out loud.
