Review of The King of Comedy (1982) by Jimmy M — 27 Jan 2009
A hilarious and timeless film, like the Pope of Greenwich Village, is one of those comedies that is hilarious because of the actors' commitment to their characters. Robert DeNiro gives his greatest performance as the dim-witted and darn right embarrassing Rupert Pupkin.
Jerry Lewis is also terrific playing it straight as Rupert's idol. Sandra Bernhard also gives an amazing performance as a spoiled New York looney bird. I'm in the minority, but I think King of Comedy is Scorcese's best film.
Truer today than ever.
