Review of The King of Comedy (1982) by Peter F — 27 May 2011
One of Scorsese's most underrated films, and a reminder of how diverse his career has been. One could call the film a cross between Taxi Driver and Network, as Robert DeNiro's Rupert Pupkin is really just as delusional and crazy as Travis Bickle, plus the script comments on the flaws of network television.
Still, The King of Comedy has more dark humor than either of those films, and I personally found the ending to be more provocative than Network's. Certainly up there as one of the best American films of the 80s.
