Review of The King of Comedy (1982) by Mike A — 17 Dec 2011
Check off another masterpiece to Mr. Scorsese. I don't think the movie is a laugh riot but more of a haunting exercise in fanaticism. DeNiro is in rare form yet again. If his performance doesn't work the entire movie fails, he's just outstanding.
When I saw Sandra Bernhard's name in the credits I cringed a bit but I was pleasantly surprised, she gives a great supporting performance. Also Jerry Lewis is fantastic. Scorsese's direction is subtle but once again great.
The scene of Lewis alone in his apartment or how he doesn't use a reaction shot during DeNiro's monologue are just a few of the many brilliant scenes he crafts.
