A truly strange and offbeat film, with a central story that on paper looks like it may not work, but with geniuses like Scorses and De Niro on board it manages to become an extremely compelling and utterly engaging watch.
De Niro gives one of his greatest ever performances, and is able to craft a character who you are compelled to watch, displaying both a level of fondness and a palpable sense of unease. At times comic, at others truly dark, yet always totally watchable and thought provoking.
A real gem.
