Review of The King of Comedy (1982) by Rocknblues 8 — 23 Feb 2014
The King of Comedy seems Robert De Niro give one of his most underrated performance ever as Rupert Pupkin a failing comedian that looks up to Jerry Langford and will stop at nothing to get him to hear a tape of his "act". That includes following him to public events or even to his office harassing him daily.
I feel this might be Martin's most underrated movie. It's a companion piece to Taxi Driver of sorts. No, Rupert isn't insane enough to murder, but he's just as obsessed. Sadly, there have been more tragic real life examples of how the relationship between fan and celeb can go too far. And Jerry Lewis gives an outstanding performance showing what a tough position it can be in trying to keep your privacy while not enraging your fans. It's just a great and fun movie that all Martin fans and non fans should see at least once.
