Review of The Killing of Sister George (1968) by Caitlin H — 05 Jul 2008
Beryl Reid gives the performance of her life as a wonderfully bitter tv soap actress about to be axed from the show, and Susannah York, as her lover is simply enchanting. Admittedly they play very stereotypical butch/femme, dominant/submissive roles, but even having such a blatant lesbian relationship was groundbreaking at the time.
The film feels so British it's hard to believe it was directed by Robert Aldrich, and while not as good as his Whatever Happened To Baby Jane, it is still a classic...
