Review of The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) by Wayne M — 25 Nov 2017
The Killing of a Sacred Deer is another strange and wondrous film from the creative mind of director Lanthimos. It's a psychological drama, a morality tale. It's unsettling and disturbing and yet strangely beautiful.
Set in a midwest American city the two main characters are two affluent doctors and their seemingly perfect two children. A teenage boy enters the scene and a seemingly natural relationship between him and the father is turned on its end as we discover there are dark secrets and retribution to be had.
The films of Lanthimos always feels slightly off kilter. Dialogue is syncopated and odd moments pop up that make you think something doesn't quite add up. Like his previous film The Lobster behaviour becomes odder and darker as the film progresses reaching some rather dark areas that might not be for everyone.
This film seems to be concerned with characters paying for their past sins, which reach a rather shattering conclusion. As said, this film will not please all but it's a unique, captivating film that had me engrossed through out.
