Review of The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) by Tom R — 31 Dec 2017
Not sure what's good about the film. I loved the Lobster, but this film is too slow, and once you realize what's happening, the only thing you watch for is who gets killed. There's no symbolism, no metaphor, no commentary on society, and killing Martin is strangely not considered.
The sexual advance of Martin's mother is not explained either. I get that it's loosely based on a Greek play and that Lanthimos is Greek, but that's no excuse. The name is also obnoxiously misleading, because unlike the play, there is no sacred deer.
The dialogue of the Lobster works well, but he'd better not stick with that for all of his films. Watch the Lobster, but don't watch this.
