Review of The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) by Paola C — 16 Aug 2018
How can I begin to describe Yorgos Lanthimos work? I would say that is a beautiful anxiety or a beautiful discomfort.
Every person that has the opportunity to be a viewer of this Yorgos´ work is a person that has the opportunity to experience a dream. His kind of film and direction guides you to go inside the film and experience it with the rest of the character's, kind of being a stalker of their lives. First of all, the team of actors and actresses are incredible. We have seen Nicole Kidman before in a film of one of the best directors ever in life, "Eyes Wide Shut". Where she combines her experience of a great actress with the fluency of a great script. I think that her performance in "The Killing Of A Sacred Deer" goes beyond excellent. You actually can feel everything she's going through as a mom. The performance of Colin Farrell is kind of poor but the one of Barry Keoghan goes even further than Kidman's. This is the first time I see him on the big screen and I can tell that he´s one of a kind.
About the script and storytelling, maybe you can be confused by the end, but you can check out some Greek mythology to understand a little more. To build a script out of mythology is something that can turns out majestic or pretty poor. This is absolutely majestic.
Yorgos made me feel a lot of things between anxiety, discomfort and with his scenes took out of some kind of a strange dimension, he made me feel most of all like a ghost watching every step. Just sublime.
