Review of The Killing Fields (1984) by Dave L — 03 Apr 2011
This is a good film, and it's portrayal of the Khmer Rouge is graphically brutal. I can see why S Ngor got the Oscar for his depiction of Dith Prang seeing as he's not actually an actor. There does however feel as though something is missing from the film.
It takes for granted that you already know about the conflict in Cambodia in the seventies and the cause and effect of the Vietnam war. Especially in relation to the subsequent bombing campaign by the US in Cambodia which gave rise to the Khmer Rouge.
None of the history is fully explained and only snippets of information are divulged and as a result you feel slightly lost as the story unfolds.
