Hayden is simply a terrific lead, so charismatic. Likewise Elisha Cook has the sort of defeated down on his luck protagonist role mastered. Not until William H. Macy in the 1990's does another actor nail that sort of role.
Kubrick is gearing up for his future masterpieces in this gem.
