It's easy to see why this has been an inspiration for so many film makers over the years. The control Kubrick exerts on the format of a story and the structure of a narrative is impressive still, despite decades of inspired knock-offs. So much so, that it can distract and make it easy to overlook how much other great stuff is going on.
Classic pulp noir that feels like a heist movie. It doesn't step on itself and its intense the whole way through.
Absolutely deserving of its legacy.
