Talk about tautness and tension...and taking on the challenge of translating a Jim Thompson novel to film (others: After Dark, My Sweet, The Getaway, Coup de Torchon, The Grifters. Sterling Hayden (the same Colonel Jack Ripper in Dr Strangelove!) leads the caper-gone-wrong.
The final scene references James Cain/Raymond Chandler's existential ending of despair in Double Indemnity.
