Review of The Killing (1956) by Matt C — 31 Mar 2010
Holy moley did this one catch me off guard. I bought this film thinking, alright it's Kubrick so it has to be good, but will it live up to purchase-worthy? The answer: a million times over YES! Now, it does start off rather slow in order to get acquainted with the characters and plot, but once it starts rolling past all the necessities, it snowballs into a monstrosity of classic film noir gold.
It leaves you on the edge of your seat with every next thrill threaded between the scenes. The unique chopped-up story telling style makes one wonder why Tarantino was praised for such creativity for Pulp Fiction when Kubrick pulled off something very similar 40 years earlier! Yeah I said it, and I fucking love Pulp Fiction.
But Kubrick just shows why he was, is and always will be one of the greatest. He had no bounds to his creativity and it shines through beautifully in this film as well. One of his top 3 best films right here.
BUY IT, you won't regret it.
