Review of The Killer Shrews (1959) by Tim S — 05 Feb 2013
This is a somewhat underrated B-Movie with a pretty decent monster. Well its a shrew but I am fairly certain this is the only movie about a "Shrew". The whole plot revolves around that horror to life as we know it, MAN who tampers with nature and genetically alters shrews and causes them to grow many times there size. However this yields some grave consequences as the Shrews began to devour the food supply on an island. A man named Thorne Sherman comes to the island on a boat with his skipper Rook, whom is definitely stereotyped but its done in a nice way, well....check it and you'll see what I mean. Nothing negative there is what I am trying to convey. But Thorne soon learns after his short stay that something is a miss, and what else could possibly happen?? Well Killer Shrews of course! The rest of the movie is typical. We have monsters, so we have to figure out how to escape, tension between two males, and then we figure out how to escape. But it works out nicely and the film is enjoyable for what its worth. I actually enjoyed the ending and the way that the characters get to it is actually interesting and somewhat thought out. I enjoyed this movie but it does have its flaws. The dialogue is very laughable and forgettable, nothing really happens in term of character development. Its cliche but it works. The whole look of the "Shrews" is more humorous than it is frightening and it really makes you wonder if the creators were really trying to scare the audience. I did appreciate the overall actions of the "Shrews".
But overall, this movie is definitely shining in the campy department so if you're into that sort of thing than this definitely a worthwhile flick. Its public domain to which means you can find it on youtube or even a collection of movies for about ten to fifteen dollars, so eat your heart out fans of the campy!
