Affleck's characterization is a bit too sterile, and the pic's too shiny for a gritty and dusty Jim Thompson yarn. Ms. Alba's transformation into lip gloss and hamburger is over the top and in your face, so to speak.
Consider reading the book, where the brutality is better left to the imagination.
