Review of The Killer Inside Me (2010) by Michael V — 23 Mar 2011
Casey Affleck channels his inner Patrick Bateman and does faboulous. This is a great character with lots of depth and levels. And although it was shot with great artistic style, all headlights emerging from a dusty road, and people sitting alone at diners.
It fails on the suspense. The only times I found my eyes to be 100% focused on the screen was when he brutally beat hotties to death. And boy did he ever. With how horrific it was I still felt the film didn't go far enough into his pysche.
Now if David Lynch had been helming it you would have seen quite the twisted world. And as far as the noir feel it tried to capture it failed but not by all that much. I kept having a Postman always Rings Twice or Blood Simple feel while watching this.
That said, this is an accomplished effort from a director who clearly knows his material well, and Casey Affleck gives an effortless performance as Lou Ford. And I like the often seamless segue from sex to violence and back to tender embrace; it illustrates perfectly the dynamics of S/M, if nothing else.
Highly reccomend it despite it's flaws.
