Review of The Killer Inside Me (2010) by Remo S — 01 Oct 2010
The Killer Inside Me is a brutal, masochistic, violent movie that is very, very unpleasant in its subject matter and the violence put on film will certainly rattle your cage a bit.
I'm on the fence on this one. On the one hand, I enjoyed the slow pace of the film, telling the story of a small town sheriff, who has a dark side, a very dark side. This is a story, where you as the viewer have the answers to the "mystery" while other characters are investigating the "who done it" scenarios. And in that regard, its very rewarding to watch how it all unfolds.
On the other hand, this film is littered with scenes of sex and violence that were unsettling and disturbing. So much so, that at times, I was very uncomfortable watching it. There's your warning...dont tell me I didnt warn you.
Fans of film noir will see the subtleties and may enjoy it for that alone. And it may be one of the best in film noir in a long time. However, its hard to get past the disturbing violence.
The performances are fairly good and feature some respectable turns by Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, and Simon Baker. The stand-out however, is Casey Affleck, this guy continues to churn out film roles that are uniquely different from the last.
But at the end of it all, I keep coming back to the violence and maybe that's the point. This is a violent film about violence. This is not for everyone. Some will be disgusted and wont make it past the first 20 minutes. Others may make it to the one hour mark with an uneasy feeling. And still others will stick with it -- and still scratch your head at the end and say "what in the hell did I just watch and why.".
The Killer Inside Me is one of those films where you will be shocked, disgusted and disturbed. At times you wont want to watch, but yet, you cant turn away.
