Review of The Kids Are All Right (2010) by Jaminiqua D — 03 Jul 2011
"The Kids Are All Right" was one of those films that could have completely gone in the wrong direction if we didn't have the cast that we did. The performances are what made the movie here. Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo were all pretty excellent. It was a true treat to see these guys act with each other. The plot itself is sweet, and pretty original to say the least.
Two kids who have two moms find out who there sperm-father is so they meet him and think he's really cool, but the mothers at first are reluctant to trust him. Though they really like their dad, it seems like the family's situation is going through a downward spiral with no way out, and they don't know what to do. So like I said, the movie seems like it can be horrible, but with the right cast, it's a pretty good movie. And that's what happened here.
Like I said, the acting was excellent. Annette Bening was my absolute favorite. She had this strong, repressive attitude, and when she lets it all out during the last few sequences of the film, it really brings tears to your eyes. She is truly a wonderful actress. Julianne Moore was also pretty good, conveying that cool "sup dude" style that she has in a lot of her films, and the same thing goes for Mark Ruffalo, who gave a similar performance. To put it simply, the acting was excellent.
There's not much more to say about this movie. I can say that a loved the cinematography, mainly because of the vast landscape shots during the gardening scenes, or traveling scenes. It really brought the composure and emotional style of the movie full circle. But like I said twice, the acting is what made this movie what it was. It's truly an entertaining movie. It's heartfelt, funny, sad, and memorable. Definitely something to see.
