Review of The Kids Are All Right (2010) by Emily F — 16 Jul 2011
After getting some dvds while on holiday in Phuket, I went back to my hotel room and started running through the academy award nominees in my head. Black Swan, 127 Hours etc. I vaguely remembered The Kids Are All Right but am glad I did, I've liked what i've seen of Mark Ruffalo, his laid back style of acting.
I head back to the dvd stall to get a copy. This movie didn't dissappoint, after a slew of overhyped flixs like Green Lantern, Transformers 3 etc, it was nice to watch a good drama/comedy. 3 seasoned actors, Benning, Moore and Ruffalo were just perfect.
I'm no acting expert but they were perfect in my eyes. Moore and Ruffalo, if i'm not wrong were in Blindness as well. The kids, played by Hutcherson and Mia Wasikowska of Alice in Wonderland fame were ok for me.
The real charm of this movie is the warmth of family despite the obvious lesbian aspect to it. If this was a novel, it would be a breezy, fun read while still getting its message across. It's good to see that these kind of movies are still being made.
Reminds me of Juno and 500 Days of Summer, 2 low-key movies but which I hugely enjoyed. Highly recommended!
