Review of The Kids Are All Right (2010) by Tea R — 28 Jul 2011
I have never been a huge fan of movies that feign reality with one in a million scenarios, but this film delivers authenticity with its uncommon premise. The acting is superb across the board and Cholodenko should be praised for making the most with the talented cast assembled for her first major picture.
Bening and Moore played partners, Nic and Jules. They captured the nuances of a 20 year marriage so well that it was never significant that they were both women. Nicâ(TM)s preoccupied spouse and controlling parent and the unappreciated Jules were symbolic of many of the struggles marriages face.
The introduction of the sperm donor (played multi-dimensionally by Ruffalo) into the children's lives was both awkward and profound. In the end you realize that this unconventional family has more in common with yours then you would have thought.
Your parents may embarrass you, your siblings may irritate you, you may feel let down, but you love each other unconditionally and they remain an escapable part of you.
