Review of The Kids Are All Right (2010) by Jiana W — 13 Oct 2011
*shrugs* I guess this received so much acclaim because of its unique subject matter. There aren't many Hollywood films like this with A-list actresses in the leads. But if this were about a married heterosexual couple, honestly I don't think anyone would have given a rat's behind because it really wasn't that great. It was just okay.
The acting is really good. I liked Mark Ruffalo's character and had a hard time seeing him as the "bad guy". After all, Nic was an aloof, insufferable d-bag for nearly the entire movie, no one put a gun to those kids' heads and forced them to look up their sperm donor in the first place, Jules was a cheater... so no one was necessarily better than the other.
It was more comedic than I anticipated as well. For the most part, it keeps things fairly light-hearted so you won't see any instances of, say, gay-bashing or dramatic moments pertaining to Jules and Nic's relationship. It doesn't really seem to have an over-arching message other than marriage is hard no matter who it involves. I didn't like that Joni's relationship with her friend ended the way it did. A kiss at a party and then.... nothing? They spent the whole movie making goo-goo eyes at each other and I really thought something was going to come out of all that. Lame.
