Review of The Kids Are All Right (2010) by Luke H — 07 Mar 2012
A refreshingly simple and original family drama about the children of a lesbian couple who decide to contact their biological father, leading to their rather idealised family portrait quickly becoming dysfunctional.
It is a very modern and very honest take on family life, and it works very well at this level, never attempting to go beyond its boundaries or make ridiculous statements about what family life is about.
The humour is not overt, the narrative is not overly cliche, the characters are not two dimensional. Indeed, the characters themselves are brilliantly created and the stellar performances make them authentic and memorable.
Bening and Moore are two of the best mature actresses in the industry, and Wasikowska is one of the most talented young actresses in the industry, providing a rich and eclectic combination of personalities.
The Kids Are All Right is an astutely executed drama, with all the hallmarks of a great film and that rare idiosyncrasy; it feels more like reality than a script.
