Review of The Kids Are All Right (2010) by Cory K — 06 Apr 2012
The most remarkable thing about Lisa Cholodenko's "The Kids Are All Right" is the effortlessness of it all. Every aspect of the filmmaking process it executed to complete perfection. The performances from Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson (in my favorite male supporting performance of 2010) are exceptional.
These characters seem like real, flawed, flesh and blood people. The writing, by Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg, is fresh, poignant, entertaining and always interesting. Every line of dialogue seems authentic, every situation rings true.
This is a film about having a family in 2010, how messy it can be, how hard it is to sustain a marriage, how blurred the boundaries can become, how joyous the connections we make can be, how difficult the smallest of problems can become.
"The Kids Are All Right" is one of my favorite films of the year for being true, entertaining and perfectly made.
