Review of The Kids Are All Right (2010) by Amanda C — 06 Jan 2014
A nice little family dynamic film, with a 'twist', wherein lies the problem. The family in question is a lesbian couple who has each given birth to one of their kids using the same sperm donor.
While filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko's choice to focus on a non-traditional nuclear family is amicable, there are times that it comes across as a gimmick to create some buzz around the film. That's not to say that there are not elements that are very well done.
The performances are all solid and the dynamic between Ruffalo, Moore and Bening has just the right amount of awkward warmth to make it believable. The script provides all involved with some lovely character moments, it would just be nice if there wasn't an underlying current of "look at us we have gay people in our movie".
