Review of The Kids Are All Right (2010) by Anthony I — 16 Oct 2014
Sure, I admired some of the acting. But, what we have here is a would-be profound, cornball, pretentious story. Nothing really happened here that intrigued me in the slightest bit. A same-sex romantic dramedy has a lot more potential than this script allows.
If anything, it makes it seem like same-sex couples are more dysfunctional than anything else. Was that supposed to be the message of the story? Highly doubtful. The two leading ladies give fine performances, but Mark Ruffalo is absolutely draining as the estranged donor.
He practically played the roll sleepwalking. The universal acclaim this movie has is verging on disgusting. The movie, like the kids, is just all right... maybe even less.
