Review of The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977) by Adrian Z — 04 Jun 2010
3 out of 5 - This movie is just a few months younger than I am, so I found it easy to see where the humour and jokes were coming from. The Zucker Bros., Jim Abrahams, and John Landis seem to be having an absolute ball (behind and in front of the camera) as they parody anything from commmercials to films (including a lengthy spoof of Bruce Lee's Enter The Dragon).
Fortunately, the fun is also to be had at the viewers end. Although some skits miss the mark (either somewhat or completely), others hit gold, and meet uprorious laughter. Unlike Monty Python's witty and intellectual spin on parody (which the film does approximate only a very few times), KFM is extremely immature (see the many gratuitious boobs), and pushes the envelope of good taste (see the extremely darkly humourous "Death Fund" skit) but is also genuinely infectious and should appeal to the teen inside the thirtysomething body.
Probably a great party movie too.
