Review of The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977) by Chris W — 12 May 2013

The Kentucky Fried Movie doesn't have the same comedic impact today that it did back in 1977 due to similar comedic antics being overused in many modern day comedies, but for the day the ideas would have been new and it served as the beginning of the careers of John Landis and The Zucker Brothers.

The Kentucky Fried Movie serves to live up to the ridiculous nature of its title and becomes a comedically unstructured sketch comedy with many clever spoofs and a couple of laughs, even though they don't match the standard they did in 1977.

The humour in The Kentucky Fried Movie is crude but funny, like the humour in half the movies nowadays, but to see one of the original films that served as a breakthrough for John Landis who later helmed the comedic masterpiece National Lampoon's Animal House and The Blues Brothers, and David Zucker who later created the hilarious Flying High! (Airplane), as well as Baseketball.

The Kentucky Fried Movie serves as a piece of nostalgia due to its references to films from the day it was created, such as the Disaster Genre and the Kung Fu genre which peaked during the 1970's time period, and since society today didn't grow up with those it doesn't seem as funny, but nevertheless I enjoyed it, as I did the film as a whole. Not as much as I would of back in the films Heyday, but still somewhat.

The only criticism I could give is that the camera quality is rather poor in certain scenes, particularly the news parody in the introduction, but considering the budget and the time you can't hold it over the film top high.

So The Kentucky Fried Movie is a nostalgic piece of comedy with a hell of a name.
