Review of The Keep (1983) by David M — 01 Mar 2008
I first saw the 'silver cross' scene from this on Alex Cox's Moviedrome on BBC2 when I was a laddie and it burned itself onto my brain forever. Together with the opening sequence, I have never experienced such a truly dreamlike feeling from a movie since.
The Tangerine Dream score aids this immeasurably, of course. Reoprts of studio intereference probably 'helps' the incoherence of the film but I kinda like that quality too; not everything has to be logical and explained in such an atmospheric and truly one-off picture.
Even so, I do wish Michael Mann would stop making thrillers with men in grey suits and get this polished up and out onto a deluxe DVD pronto!
