Review of The Keep (1983) by Eric R — 24 Nov 2010
This is a truly awful movie, but not really because of the acting or the story, but because it was the victim of terrible decision making on the part of the studio. The movie was filmed one way, then the studio stepped in cut it down to less than half of what was needed, then proceeded to give us a choppy movie that makes little sense.
The worst crime of all, though, is the fact that you can actually see a better movie in this cut. You can feel the movie that this was supposed to be, with its grand scale and numerous characters. As it is, there is not time for character development, plus several of the characters quickly disappear for 40 minutes then arrive suddenly later, talking as if they had been there the entire time.
It's so tragic to see this. I'd love to, one day, see a much longer, much better cut of this film. Until then, we are left with this mess of a movie that is a shell of what could have been.
