The Keep represents an early film in Michael Mann's body of work, and it is a satisfying--if flawed--piece of historic, Gothic cinema. An absolutely superb collection of actors (Scott Glenn, Gabriel Byrne, Ian McKellen, etc.

) coupled with artful direction makes The Keep an unforgettable piece of horror cinema. The Keep remains flawed at the plot level--it never quite makes sense or coheres into something genuinely great. However, Michael Mann demonstrates--even at this early date-- an ability to construct shots that rivals some of the greatest directors in cinematic history.
