Review of The Karate Kid Part III (1989) by Mark T — 10 Feb 2012
Sorry, there is just way too much wrong with this film to be redeemed by its good parts. In fact, the best thing in this movie is the flashback to the first two films. I'm a huge fan of the original, and was even an extra in this film (the big crowd at the end)... so this third outing was a definite disappointment.
The biggest problem that destroys this movie is the unbelievability of everything. Why the hatred towards Daniel & Miyagi? Why would a big business man try to "redeem" his failing Cobra Kai chain by being an over-the-top a**hole? Why is Daniel so stupid, and how come he can't remember his love interests for more than a couple beats? And if all this fighting is about winning "The Title" in the Karate Championship... why do they try so hard to inflict pain above simply winning? Duh!
On and on the stupidity goes. Even after Mr. Miyagi kicks some butt... THEN he gives in and lets Daniel compete in the tournament? WHA? Now? After putting up with all that crap, you go kick some but and THEN give in? Oh come on.... And where you had this great tournament in the first film, here we are given merely the one final match (Lame!).
The movie isn't a total loss... there's always the beautiful music (from the previous films), the great Pat Morita and.... uh, well... hmmmm.
