Review of The Karate Kid Part II (1986) by Jesse O — 05 Feb 2011
This movie was endlessly entertaining. Is it technically a better movie?? Probably not. But I had so much more fun watching this movie than I did with the first one. The villains had a lot to do with this enjoyment.
Mostly Sato though. They're corny but still awesome. Chozen wears such ridiculous shirts in this movie that you CAN'T help but hate him. And the first two buttons on these shirts are NEVER buttoned, so it's even greater.
I wanted to see how he would top himself with these fucking shirts. If they sold all his shirts that he wore in the movie at an auction, I'd certainly do my best to acquire these shirts. I would never wear them, I would just have them.
And there's this incredibly AWESOME moment with Sato and Mr. Miyagi. Basically throughout the entire movie Sato keeps calling Miyagi a coward for leaving when he was 18 and challenges him to a fight.
Mr. Miyagi, being the awesome man that he is, always refuses. Then Sato and his GOONS~! start destroying the village. Mr. Miyagi finally decides to fight Sato at midnight on the condition that Sato hands over the deed to the village and promises not to destroy it.
It's ON now!!! So it's now and Mr. Miyagi and Sato are praying in different dojos. Suddenly, before the FIGHT~! a random ass storm hits the town (by the way...that was REALLY stretching things, but I'll forgive them because this movie is so awesome).
Sato's dojo is destroyed and Sato is trapped under a wooden beam from his dojo. Mr. Miyagi and Daniel rush to save him. When Sato realizes that Miyagi is there he's like "NOW YOU COME TO FIGHT.
..COWARD!!! NOW WHEN I AM HELPLESS. THIS IS ONLY WAY YOU CAN WIN!!!" and I've fast forwarded through the entire movie again just to get down the EXACT quote. He said more, but that is what is most important.
And he said this in such an angry manner as possible, hence the all caps, that I just PISSED myself with laughter. It was so fantastic that he Sato thought Mr. Miyagi would kill him now, because he clearly has not been watching the movie he's in.
You know what? I'm upgrading this movie to 4 stars because of that moment. I don't give a FUCK. This movie is fucking GREAT. Pat Morita is/was a great man. Ralph Macchio as Daniel is a great little character that you can get behind.
He's just a very likeable fellow, not much of a dancer though. And the villains are OUT of this world. They're just great. I'll always remember this movie because of Sato and Chozen. Tamlyn Tomita is AWFULLY cute too, but she and Ralph Macchio had NO chemistry whatsoever.
So yea, if you don't like this movie then I don't know what the fuck is wrong with you.
