The Karate Kid is another one of those beautiful films that can only work in the 80's. The story concerns the new kid Ralph Macchio who leaves the tough streets of New Jersey and moves to the (apparently) tougher streets of California (lol) where a group of martial arts bullies (led by the 80's king of doucehbags William Zabka) beat him up every day, all while pining for his dream girl Elisabeth Shue.

As luck would have it, the apartment complex that Macchio resides in has a handyman (Pat Morita) who grows fond of him and takes him into his dojo, to teach him the ways of karate and enters him in a karate tournament where he can face his demons head on.

Naturally, Macchio is resistant, especially when several lessons involve what looks to be house chores. Eventually, the underdog overcomes and we have the next best thing to Rocky in The Karate Kid. Nothing brings back more nostalgia than this film, from it's music to the clothes to the wacky antics of people.

Those who know me know my intense love for all things 80's, and Karate Kid is one of them, flaws and all. Speaking of flaws, I'm sure 18-year-old Johnny Idiot can point out tons of flaws in the film and would much rather prefer his Michael Bay movies or even the upcoming (gag) Karate (puke!) Kid (gag) remake, but to the more astute movie watcher who isn't a complete moron, this movie's flaws are what makes up its charm.

It's meant to delight and entertain. The remake however, is meant to cash-in on idiots who fall prey to movies nowadays that have name brand value. As far as legitimate flaws go, the film could have better served having a less abrupt and sudden ending.

Other than that, Macchio and Morita make up one of the greatest lost duos of our time. Also, great direction from esteemed John G. Avildsen (who incidentally directed the best Rocky AND the most hated, yet shamefully underrated Rocky).

As for the remake, DON'T SEE IT!! DON'T BE LIKE THE REST OF THE SHEEP AND GIVE YOUR MONEY TO UNORIGINAL GARBAGE!!
